Are there internet sites that offer lower hotel rates than the hotels do?

hotels
JudasHero asked:

I see some travel and hotel sites offering discounts and claiming lower rates than the hotels themselves offer. Is this true? For instance, Excalibur is offering $51 a night, but are there any other sites (such as hotelclub) that offer discounts on this, or cheaper rates than this?

It is possible and will vary greatly from case to case.

There are sites that buy up blocks of rooms and
then can sell them cheaper than the hotel itself.

When and where that happens depends greatly
on circumstances. Are there lots of unsold rooms ?
Is it a high-end or bargain oriented hotel ?

The only solution is to keep looking around.

For an already rock-bottom price of $51 for
major Las Vegas hotel (even if it’s not one of
the better ones), there’s not much room
for further discounts, so in that case I’d say
that’s probably about it on that deal.

I often heard that and even use it as a tool to negociate prices in my home country, Germany. When I use a hotel for accomodation on travel, and the desk attended tells me the price for a room, like 50 Euros, i’m gonna tell him that I have seen an offer for 35 € on the internet, and generally get that price.

Vegas.com sometimes has better deals. I tried Priceline once, and even though it said the hotel was ON the strip, it was about a block behind it. We ended up at a nice hotel, but if this is your first time to vegas stay at one of the main casino/hotels ON the strip.

Generally no, the hotels guarentee to offer the cheapest rates directly, unless you geta non refundable offer you also have the advanatge of being able to cancel up to 48 hours before check in and if the rate drops after you book you can call the hotel and they will adjust your rate. YOu also only pay the first night as a deposit.
This is teh best offer available for the Excalibur from $51per night free upgrade to Widescreen room and $25 food credit

Here is the guarentee form Excaliburs website
    * Guaranteed lowest rate for our rooms. If you find a lower rate we will match it. (Excludes packages, promotions and non-refundable/non-cancelable offers).
    * No Extra Hidden Service Fees
    * 48-Hour, full-refund cancellation Policy on most reservations.
    * Access to exclusive email Offers when you opt-in while booking.

A local site is BUT with the economy ALL hotels are offering specials including discounted rooms or upgrades, food credits, free or discounted shows, etc. I would contact the hotel directly.

Just take some time and go to the various sites and enter the same info on each and compare … keep in mind that most of the travel sites will add a booking fee at the end of your purchase and hotels sites do not. The hotels are now offering better deals directly to customers on their own site. This them from paying the other sites commissions. You get the savings direct.

The best thing you can do is to check out listed sites on the net…however, I always check out i4vegas.com for room prices. Not all hotels are available on this site, but there is a choice from the strip and “Downtown” on Fremont Street. Also their prices did beat the Hotel prices in May of this year! We stayed at the Plaza for 4 nights and paid $134 for our stay! We always stay downtown, and either bus or taxi to the strip when the mood strikes us…Staying “downtown” and paying the price of the taxi still seems to beat the usual prices of a room on the strip!

Cheaper than hotels is one of several websites – but it does also offer last minute discounted rates and i think HotelClub is part of it :

It’s just a matter of purchasing power – you can always find cheaper than the branded price of anything.
