Erik Munkle asked:
I’m taking my family (wife and 2 teenage kids) for the first time to Vegas. I’d like to stay at a decent hotel on the strip. How can i get discounted accommodation and what are some of the newer good hotels on the strip to stay at?
This is a little bit of a tricky question because newer usually means more expensive, and with hotels going up all the time in Vegas, newer is kind of relative. However, I think there are some great places you can stay on the Strip that you will find affordable.
I would recommend (from most expensive to least expensive) Mandalay Bay (built in 1999), NY NY (1997), and Luxor (1993). They are all good hotels with great amenities, from beaches and wave pools to shopping to arcade games. Plus, they are all within walking distance to Showcase Mall, which has more arcade games, a climbing wall and more.
To book your trip, consider getting a package deal if you are flying (check out). If you just need a hotel, go to to get an idea of the base price for the hotel, check out the Las Vegas Advisor and look at their room rate survey ( ), and also try to get a promotion code ( ) for the hotel.
Good luck!
Thanks,
Mike
There are a few 4 star hotels on the strip you can book at great discount prices. You just have to skip the middleman and book directly from the hotels using their discount promo codes. Here is a list of hotel has their discount codes.
You can etgood rates at MGM, Luxor adn Ecxcalibur all of these would be good choices with MGM being the nicest and Excalbur being the cheapest.

I know you said “on the strip” , but, just to give you another option. The Orleans is one of our favorites and IMO, it’s the best hotel in Las Vegas for families.
The Orleans is located about 1 mile west of the strip. They do have a free shuttle to the center of the strip.
On the strip, I would suggest the MGM-Grand
Or the Luxor

There are some really good hotels on the Las Vegas Blvd. with promotion offers. A great resource for Las Vegas promo codes is
I agree with Luxor, NYNY. Aim for Sun-Thurs, and check expedia since that is where I find the best deals. If you book air and hotel, they can offer better hotel deals than other sites or even the hotel’s web site itself.
Word to the wise: unless you and the Mrs keep gambling to a minimum, your teens won’t have the best time. Even though Vegas has a lot of attractions that are family-friendly, they are NOT allowed on the gaming floor, and security will be watching you.
My bf’s brother brought his three teenage sons (we had hoped it would just be his bro and his wife) and the boys were very frustrated that there wasn’t enough for them to do. This was after we took them to the Stratosphere, Caesar’s Atlantis show, NYNY Coney Island, Luxor’s arcade, etc. They were exhausted from walking, but still upset that they couldn’t come to the casinos after hours. I asked them a year ago what they thought about Vegas and they insisted that it is NOT fun for the under 21 crowd, and they tell all of their friends to skip going with their parents. They will be waiting a few years before going back.
Hopefully your kids will have a better appreciation for the city. Just thought I would give you a heads up of what could happen.
The least expensive properties are often the least pleasant. The atmosphere may be more like a big discount store on a Saturday morning than a Las Vegas resort.
Circus Circus and Excalibur are traditionally very low priced and family oriented BUT teens are too old for those places.
Planet Hollywood, Mandalay Bay and MGM should appeal to teens but may be too high priced for your budget.
In my opinion, Luxor offers the best balance between an affordable price and pleasant atmosphere on the strip… I’ve stayed there three times; have visited Las Vegas 16 times.
